Hakone’s Weaving Origami: The Crane Wife Series Exhibit

Hakone Estate and Gardens just debuted a fascinating exhibit, “Weaving Origami: The Crane Wife Series,” based on the beloved Japanese folk tale.
Created by renowned San Jose artist Susie Taylor, the exhibit features her unique interpretation of the tale, told in a stunningly simple, yet complex 10-panel series of weaving and origami folding. The display, which is included in the Hakone admission price, runs through June, 2019.
“The Crane Wife” tells the haunting story of a poor man who finds an injured crane and nurses it back to health. When he sets it free, a woman appears at his door whom he falls in love with and marries. To make more money, she offers to weave beautiful silk clothes they can sell—but only if he agrees never to watch her making them. They begin to become wealthier, and in his greed, he ignores her declining health. He spies on her to find out how she makes the silk so desirable, and discovers a crane plucking feathers from her own body and weaving them into the loom. The crane sees him and flies away—never to return.
