MASTERING GLAZES WORKSHOP WITH JOHN BRITT

This three-day hands-on workshop is designed to show students how to test a base glaze recipe and get various colors in cone 6 electric and cone 10 reduction firings. On Friday we will prepare test tiles with a base glaze and ten colorant variations. On Saturday we will fire, and on Sunday we will unload our tiles and discuss the results. John Britt will also present an overview of ceramic glazes, focusing on cone 6 and cone 10 glazes. We will discuss cones, kilns, firing dynamics and principles, as well as how to apply those principles to various firing cycles. Britt will cover basic classifications of glazes, like ash, celadon, temmoku, etc. Glazes will be discussed in a practical and easy to understand dialogue designed to help potters gain an understanding of glazes, firing and glazing. The casual question and answer structure of his workshop allows students’ interest to drive the content of the weekend. Discussions will cover how and why each type of glaze works and how you can achieve desired results, and how to adjust your glazes. We will review glazes from John’s new book: The Complete Guide to Mid-Range Glazes: Glazing and Firing at Cones 4 - 7 as well as his high-fire book. Participants must bring 10-20 bisque-fired test tiles, Cone 6 & Cone 10 clays only! Clearly marked please (making test tiles: https://www.amaco.com/clay_how_tos/183 ). If you use various clay bodies, please make test tiles for each clay. It is recommended that you test glazes with each clay used. Morning refreshments will be provided, but participants must bring their own lunch. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, September 6—8, 2019 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.$255 for Palo Alto Art Center Members$299 General registration
