Class Size One Billion: How Open Educational Resources Are
      Transforming Education

Ten years ago, MIT helped launch a revolution in education when
it announced it would place the core teaching materials from
its entire curriculum online for anyone to use at no charge.
Today, MIT OpenCourseWare shares materials from more than 2,000
MIT courses (more than 100M visits and 14M course downloads).
More than 250 universities around the world have joined MIT in
openly publishing their own course materials. Sites like
YouTube.edu, Khan Academy, OpenStudy.com, and MITx have emerged
to explore this new territory of informal online learning.

The presentation will be made by Cecilia d’Oliveira ('77,
SM'79), MIT OpenCourseWare’s Executive Director and Dick K.P.
Yue, (SB'74, SM'76, ScD'80), a founding faculty member of MIT
OpenCourseWare and currently Philip J. Solondz Professor of
Engineering and Professor of Mechanical and Ocean Engineering
      (http://web.mit.edu/vfrl/www/people/yue.html). It will examine
the how open educational resources are changing the educational
landscape and meeting the global demands for open knowledge.

Presentation of 2012 MIT Inspirational Teacher Awards to local
      high school teachers

Each year MIT asks current students to nominate High School
teachers that went the extra mile, in many cases they have gone
the extra 100 miles, to help their students reach their full
potential. From these nominations MIT selects between 30 and 35
to receive the MIT Inspirational Teacher Award. These awards
are presented to the recipients by local MIT alumni clubs. This
year two Northern California teachers were selected to receive
this award, Mr. William Dunbar from Henry M. Gunn High School
in Palo Alto and Mr. James Bigelow from Shasta High School in
Redding. They join nine previous awardees from Northern
California since the award was first given in 2007. Please help
      MITCNC honor these outstanding teachers.
