Open Access Four Bridges Premiere of a New Sound Work at Montalvo

Join us for the premiere of Four Bridges, a newly commissioned soundwork by US-based Lucas Artists Composer Fellow Howard Hersh!

Using wireless and geolocation technology, Hersh has created a sonic journey celebrating the beauty, mystery, and magic of the forest, leading hikers through redwood canyons into oak-lined meadows. Four Bridges is designed to be experienced by visitors over the earbuds of their smartphones. Available for free download via the mobile app platform app Detour, the work combines instrumental music, the voices of a children’s choir, field recordings, audio clips from archival sources, and readings of poetry and prose.

Describing Four Bridges, Hersh states, “Through its music and texts, I hope to create a sonic portrait of the powerful ties that bind humanity to the forest, and the mythology through which these bonds are expressed. The woods enrich and nurture us with their enduring presence; they are also the eternal observers that absorb and reflect the tragedies of our own dark tales. This immersive sonic journey does not dwell on darkness, however. It is infused with the innocent laughter of the child fairies and a lightness that promises redemption and joy.”

The premiere of Four Bridges will begin at Montalvo’s historic Villa with a reception and live performance by Cantabile Youth Singers of Silicon Valley. Guests will then be invited on a half hour hike through Montalvo’s forest to experience this newly commissioned sound work through the earbuds of their smartphones.

Listening devices will be provided for guests who do not have access to this technology. Please wear comfortable shoes suitable for hiking. Listening options for guests who are mobility impaired will also be provided.
