Patent and other Intellectual Property (IP) issues have been more important to Inventors and Companies in US, India and abroad. Intellectual assets, such as patents, copyrights and trademarks play increasingly a pivotal role in fostering innovation and economic growth in a knowledge-based economy. Competition is intense, and often revolves around an increasingly global race to acquire and assert IP rights. We hear a lot in the news about patent wars among the tech giants– Nokia vs. Google, Apple vs. Samsung and Facebook vs. Yahoo! International. Patent protection is clearly a key component of defensive and offensive competitive strategies for large global organizations. What about smaller technology players and early stage startups that don’t have the resources to hire international law firms? For cash-strapped startups, the cost to file domestic and international patents is often too complex and costly. If left unprotected, a good invention or creation may be lost to larger competitors that are in a better position to commercialize the product or service at a more affordable price, leaving the original inventor without any financial benefit or reward. Adequate protection of the company's patent asset is a crucial step in deterring potential infringement and in turning ideas into business assets with a real market value. The discussion will focus on how to build a strong patent portfolio and enforce and commercialise the same. The discussion aims to empower startups to understand the value of patent portfolio.

      • What is the difference between patents, copyrights, trademarks and trade-secrets? Which one is right for my startup?
      • What are the consequences of failure to Secure Ownership (or License) of Intellectual Property Rights? How can I protect my startup's IP before and after the incorporation?
      • Are there deadlines for IP protection? How do I develop my IP strategy to not miss some critical opportunities for protection?
      • Which items do I have to watch-out for "inbound" and "outbound" licensing? How do I avoid big errors in licensing?
      • If I use my prior employer’s resources, will my startup be jeopardized? How do I protect myself from lawsuits and criminal liability?
      • Is it ok to use open source software in my product? What do I have to do to control open source software use to avoid trouble later on?
      • I am a cash strapped startup; how can I contain the cost of IP Protection?
      • What additional things do I have to do for IP protection, if my startup operates internationally (e.g. US and India)?
      • How do I develop Patent, Copyright, Trademark, Trade-secret and licensing strategy for my startup?

If you are grappling with some of these IP questions, then this session is for you. Please join Neeraj Gupta for an informative interactive session.
