      EVENT DETAILS
Chicanas Movidas: New Narratives of Activism and Feminism in the Movement Era

This event is part of a book tour by the co-editors and contributors to Chicana Movidas: New Narratives of Activism and Feminism in the Movement Era (UT Press, 2018).   The chapters all feature "movidas" by women, a term meaning strategies, workarounds, by which women were able to do feminist work in a male-oriented Chicano movement.  The book thus features working class women, lesbians, not formally educated women who were all making social change although their efforts were not well-documented (one chapter focuses on the activism of women here in San Jose at the eastside Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in the 60s and 70s.  The event is intended to inform students and audience members of the hidden and subversive histories of these social movements, as well as model the power of community-engaged scholarship.  Audience discussion will be encouraged, and refreshments will be served.

Speakers include:   Maylei Blackwell (Chicana/o Studies, UCLA); Maria Cotera (American Culture/Latina/o Studies, University of Michigan); Osa Hidalgo de la Riva, Filmmaker, Poet, and Scholar Activist; Anna Nieto Gomez, Scholar/Activist; Susana L. Gallardo, WGSS, SJSU; and Deanna Romero, Activist/Healer

Co-hosted by WGSS and the Santa Clara County Office of Women's Policy
