      WOW! That's Engineering Conference

WOW! That's Engineering is put on by the Society of Women Engineers at San Jose State University every year. We invite companies to the conference to host exciting workshops to inspire high school girls to enter the field of engineering. Each year the conference gets better and better, and we are immensely excited to announce that the following companies / organizations will be hosting workshops this year:  Tesla, Lockheed Martin, SWE++, Santa Clara Valley Water, and SJSU 3D Printing Services. We are also pleased to announce that our keynote speech will be by Hayley Iben, a Senior Lead Software Engineer at Pixar Animation Studios.  The day's itinerary is as follows: Saturday, March 30, 2019 8:45 - 9:30am : Breakfast + Registration 9:30 - 9:45am : Introductory Remarks 9:45 -10:15am : Keynote Speech by Hayley Iben, Senior Lead Software Engineer at Pixar Animation Studios 10:40 - 11:55am : Workshop 1 ( + Parent Panel) 12:05 - 1:00pm : Lunch + Student Panel 1:10 - 2:25pm : Workshop 2 ( + Parent Panel) 2:35 - 3:50pm : Engineering Design Challenge 3:50 - 4:05pm : Prizes + Closing Remarks After you purchase a ticket, you will receive a confirmation email that leads to a Google form to choose workshop preferences. Please fill out this Google form ASAP as workshops will fill up based on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please note: This event is for high school girls only. You do not need any engineering experience / background to participate. We do not want the fees of our conference to stand in the way of a high school girl enjoying the conference. Please email us if you have any financial circumstances and we will be happy to help you out. PARENTS: You are more than welcome to accompany your daughter to the conference. We will have activities specific for parents while the girls are in their workshops. The first 30 parents to sign up for the conference will receive a free parking permit in any of SJSU's parking garages.  *Please contact us for group discounts.  *We will also be raffling off Disneyland tickets!  ________________________ WORKSHOP SUMMARIES: Valley Water: You and Your Engineering Team Will Design and Test Your Own Water Filter - Water from lakes and rivers often have contaminants that make it unfit for drinking. The water may contain dirt, rocks and other objects that can be easily identified. Water may also contain bacteria and other microscopic organisms that cannot be seen easily. Forthese reasons, water that is delivered to our homes must go through a water treatment process. Students work in teams and are asked to design methods to filter water using ordinary materials, while also considering their designs, material, and cost efficiencies. They learn about the importance of water and its role in our everyday lives. They come to understand what must occur each day so that they can have clean water. Each group will be provided with a variety of filtration material options for their design and put it to the test. Lockheed Martin: Build the Most Efficient Wind Turbine! - Renewable energy is critical for sustainably powering our technology-centered lives every day. Wind is a form of renewable energy that can be used to turn a turbine to generate electricity. A variety of factors affect the efficiency of a wind turbine and the amount of electricity that can be generated. Learn the science behind wind energy and compete to build the most efficient wind turbine! Tesla: Choose the Optimal Design for a Mini-electric Car! - Designing products that make the world better is difficult! The design of complex products like automobiles involves thousands of individual design decisions and billions of potential outcomes. One of the fundamental skills of engineering is the ability to calculate the behavior of a system using math and science to be able to understand the performance without prototypes (or before the prototypes are available). This also allows the engineer to make appropriate design choices for optimal product performance without costly guesswork. Come experience a hands-on demonstration of these techniques to optimize the performance of an miniature electric car! Participants will receive a crash course in the principles of operation of electric powertrains and vehicle dynamics, then use those principles to choose the optimal design for their mini electric car. Finally, the cars will be raced against one another to see the results of engineering optimization! 3D Printing Workshop: Learn the basics of 3D printing and take home a personalized 3D printed item! Scratch Coding Workshop: Learn the basics of Scratch and create your own dancing sprite! (Recommended for those with absolutely no coding experience).
